At Wesmere Elementary we strive to recognize and celebrate that each person is "One of a Kind". This week, students are learning about neurodiversity and how it makes us unique. Neurodiversity is understanding that our brains are all different. Neurodiversity celebrates our differences and helps us understand that we need all kinds of brains to make the world a better place. Students will participate in discussions and activities to learn how Anxiety, ADHD, and Autism may affect someone.

As the Wesmere staff prepared for the next school year, one of the most often asked questions was regarding student placement. The faculty and administration feel that the placement of children in classes for the next year is a decision of great importance - one that affects your child’s academic future at Wesmere Elementary. The procedure that we will use in placing children in classes for the fall of 2024 is outlined below. The teachers at our child’s present grade level, other school personnel, and administration will meet, compile, and discuss all the information we have about your child and make tentative class assignments. We will also utilize the following factors: Student social and emotional growth Heterogeneous academic grouping Honors qualifications (3rd - 5th) Boy/girl ratio Class composition in general Please do not request a specific teacher. We believe all the teachers at Wesmere will give your child an excellent education. The most beneficial information you can give us is related to the learning environment that best supports your child as a learner. If you have information about your child and about the kind of learning environment in which he/she seems to function best, (i.e. highly structured classroom, etc.) please share this with us by writing an email to me on or before April 5, 2024 (this is not a request for a specific teacher). You may email your request to me at murban@psd202.org. Requests made after the April 5th date may not be honored since changes to class rosters can alter the entire make-up of a class. In addition, requests for specific teachers will be returned. Please do not feel you MUST submit information. The staff at Wesmere Elementary School does an excellent job when identifying students’ strengths and areas that need to be supported. Knowing your children as learners, and knowing more about colleagues’ “style,” our staff can often make the best recommendations for next year’s placement. Next year’s class placement will continue to be published in August on the Home Access Center (HAC), which will require you to know your child’s student ID number. Your child’s ID number is located on the Student Registration Form that you have received or it can be obtained from the school office. Class lists will be posted at Wesmere before school starts but by student ID number only. No student names will be posted. In making these important decisions, we want to consider all possible and relevant information. Our goal is to make placements that will ensure the optimal learning environment for each child.
